Cloud storage consumption vs. size of files in filesystem

The amount of cloud storage used and shown in the TeamDrive app is allways different from the amount a space uses in the file system.

In the file system you have the current files only, in case they are all downloaded (offline available).


On your cloud storage, your account shows:
- all current files
- all previous versions
- all trashed files in the trash of each space until the space admin empties the trash
- all transaction logs
- all space snapshots (enable a fast join)
- all server snapshots (enables Point in Time Recovery - PiTR) More on PiTR can be found below

Given this information you see that there is much more encrypted information in the cloud than in your file system.

Keep in mind that all files get lossless compressed before they are encrypted and send to the cloud. In case you have many office files in your space, they encrypt very well and a new space will use less amount of storage in the cloud as in your file system. This will change over time as you store more versions and all the history information in each space.

Point in Time Recovery


We have recently implemented a new security feature called “Point in Time Recovery” (PiTR). PiTR enables users to roll their Spaces back to a previous time. To make rollbacks possible, the server automatically creates and stores snapshots of your Spaces on the server. The size of the server snapshots, however, are also calculated when determining the amount of storage used on the user. How much storage the server snapshots are using can be seen und “size and files”. The rollback function is only available to users with a paid license, i.e. on users with a professional (or secure office) license can perform a rollback. Server snapshots, however, are automatically created for all users. Server snapshots can be disabled by going to the info page of a Space, selecting ‘advanced’ and selecting “server snapshots”. Once server snapshots have been disabled, all server snapshots will be erased from the server and the storage will be freed.

Wir haben eine neue Sicherheitsfunktion, die wir Point in Time Recovery nennen (PiTR). Dieser Funktion ermöglicht das man ein "Rollback" auf einem Space machen bzw. man kann einen Space zu einer früheren Zeitpunkt wiederherstellen. Um diese Funktionalität zu ermöglichen, muss der Server Snapshots Ihre Spaces machen. Die Snapshots verbrauchen aber auch Ihren Speicherplatz. Unter “Größen und Dateien” können Sie sehen, wie viel Speicherplatz die Server Snapshots verbrauchen. Sie können unter den Einstellungen eines Spaces die Server-Snapshots ausschalten. Die Möglichkeit einen Space zu einem früheren Zeitpunkt wieder herzustellen ist nur mit einer kostenpflichtige Lizenz möglich. Mit einer kostenfreien Lizenz können Sie aber die Server-Snapshot Funktionalität ausschalten.

To free up your cloud storage from unwanted data, you can select between a few different options.
You need Admin rights in the Space to finally delete files.

a) delete the trash of each space
- manually or
- automatically (active spaces -> space -> (i) information -> advanced -> Delete files after ...

Attention: Files will be kept in the Cloud until the corresponding Snapshots are deleted or expired (look a point c)

b) remove old / unwanted file versions
- manually or
- automatically (active spaces -> space -> (i) information -> advanced -> Max number of versions on server ...

c) delete unwanted snapshots
- manually or
- automatically (active spaces -> space -> (i) information -> advanced -> Server snapshots -> Configure Snapshots ->

off -> Update

and /or select the new wanted setting

change settings -> Update
